“A virtually flawless example of intelligent musical design.” – XLR8R
“Pure pleasure.” – Timeout Chicago
“Melodically lush, rhythmically compelling…gloriously precise and urgent.” – The Wire
“Breathtaking…Best of 2007 alert!” – scissorkick
“Hasn’t left my stereo for weeks.” – CDReviews
“A bittersweet, innocent wash of trickling guitars that counter each other like diffident
sea creatures in courtship.” – Pitchfork

Extensive touring stateside and abroad supported the debut album ‘Law’ (mixed and recorded with John
McEntire of Tortoise/The Sea and Cake), which made numerous Best of 2007 lists, including album of the year for Groove magazine (the most-recognized music organ in Sweden). Cougar’s US publicist is Jessica Linker (Joanna Newsom, Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy, Calexico).

The band’s arrangements fall somewhere between Four Tet, Fugazi and Nick Drake’s guitar work imagined as more expansively pensive than eerily morbid. What separates Cougar from the pack is their
sensibility of form and texture, which is more in line with sample-based music and modern classical than
indie rock. Here is also the fist-in-the-air head-banger that so many groups only give ironic reference to
(with their tongues stuck firmly in their cheeks), hence the preference for new genres.

Cougar’s second album is an aggressive, narrative, efficient affair that explores even more extremes.
If an album of new music raises the question, “What kind of band IS this?” then perhaps the artist is
doing their job, and Cougar have obviously been digging the work. Urgent, captivating and strangely
moving: emergency rock.
